Fishponds, or 'The Ponds' as it is known fondly by its residents and rightly so, is home to many UWE students and a popular location for St.Matt's students because the campus is located just off Fishponds Road.
Boasting a high street and many 'local' pubs including the Wetherspoons establishment The Van Dyke, there are often rumours of Vicky Pollard sightings and other legendary Bristolian types.
Fishponds has a rich history of mining and quarrying and was a significant area in the history of Bristol's industry.
Mainly a residential area, there are two Doctors surgeries and a high street that has some main shops such as Woolworth's and Subway and a large Morrison's store as well as local stores (for example the T-shirt print shop at the bottom of Staplehill), and some great little charity shops.
One of the best things about Fishponds is the beautiful St.Matthias campus which is the oldest UWE campus and has a history of education dating back to 1853.
Just down the road from St.Matt's is Oldbury Court Estate (locally known as Vassals Park), a large green area with woodland, a river running through and paths joining up to Eastville Park. Another access point is the cycle path running parallel to Fishponds Road along the old railway track which leads to the centre (about 3miles) one way and Bath the other way.
Fishponds is small, friendly and close to the centre, Glenside and Frenchay. After some thorough exploring many intimate and seemingly hidden pubs can be found.
