The Guide

Tucked away in the south of the city, Bedminster and Southville are popular with Bower Ashton students. Bedminster is just one of Bristol's up and coming areas seeing a surge of luxury flats springing up alongside trendy bars in recent years.

Victoria Park is large, leafy and great for getting some fresh air or sprawling out in the sun with your books. Nearby is the Windmill Hill City Farm. The Farm is a community project which encourages a greater understanding of farming and sustainable living through practical workshops, community allotments, conservation areas and volunteer opportunities. Bedminster's Fiddler's is one of Bristol's best kept secrets, hosting consistently outstanding gigs, which have in the past included Feeder, Therapy, Manu Chou, the Magic Numbers and KT Tunstall.

Not strictly in Southville, the Ashton Court Estate is the home of the Bristol Balloon Fiesta and the Ashton Court Festival. Once the largest free community festival in Europe, the Festival has come under criticism due to its corporate sponsorship and expensive lineup pushing the ticket price up more every year. However at £9 in 2006, the festival still offers better value for money than comparable festivals across the country and it is undoubtedly a reason to stay in Bristol over the summer. Also found on the estate is a deer park and the Ashton Court Mansion, the venue for UWESU's annual Snowball.

The Tobacco Factory is one of the few survivals from the great Imperial Tobacco site on Raleigh Road. The Tobacco Factory is a trendy cafe/bar serving local beer brewed from its sister company's microbrewery. But what puts the venue on the map is its unconventional theatre, which offers some of the most innovative performances in the South West.
