Election Manifesto from 2007

Personal Profile

I'm a 23 year old, third year Drama student at St. Matt's. I was a Sabbatical President at my College, representing 15,000 students across five campuses -so I fully understand the complexities of multi-campus unions. Like many students, I've needed to work part-time in order to live which has meant that I haven't been able to take as active a role in the UWESU as I would have liked, until now!

Other Experience

  • RAG Officer 00-02

  • National Conference Delegate 02/03

  • President 02-03

  • SWANUS FEUD 02-03

  • NUS Board of Governors Training

  • NUS 'People and Money' Training

Manifesto

For far too long this union has been apathetic towards not only national student issues, but also it's own. I propose to bring it back to grass-roots student participation. Entertainments

  • Experienced in organising RAG and ENTS events -I know how to stick to budgets and make money!

  • Entertainments need to be more than just Crunchie. I will give dedicated help and support to students who want to put events on at their campus.

  • Freshers' Freshers week needs an overhaul -goodbye sad boy bands, hello fantastic entertainment.

Campaigns

  • Prioritise Education funding -more activism in your union.

  • First bus -increase the pressure and finally sort it out

  • Drink spiking -still a big problem. I will raise student awareness

  • Environment -Lobby University to reduce its carbon footprint and increase recycling within the union

  • Student Village -assessing its impact on UWESU involvement and adjusting budgets accordingly

  • Faculty mergers -Lobby University to ensure this has minimal negative effect on students

Democracy and Involvement

  • Develop links between campuses -a bigger officer presence to support the site chairs

  • More open meetings across campuses instead of just AGM.

  • Student Reps -provide training and increase involvement

  • Involvement -if societies involvement goes up so do your funds. Increase the profile of societies

  • Society websites-keeping the info up to date to increase involvement

  • UWESU finances- It's dire, with the experience of writing a four year strategic plan at Exeter, I'm confident I can bring that expertise to UWESU

Example Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Union Trustee

  • Chair of the Activities Council

  • Location: Sports and Activities Centre 5F2 Frenchay Campus
