Sports President Candidates
Gemma Gray
Personal Statement
Hi all, for those that don’t know me I’m Gemma Gray: an enthusiastic Sports keen bean, currently in my fourth year of a Business Studies degree, but I’m more commonly known for playing UWE Netball!
As UWE Netball President for two years and 2009/2010 Sports ‘Campaigns Officer’, I more than understand the pressures of running a club, as well as wanting to keep fit and have fun whilst doing so!
Whether you are someone that is running a sports club, participating in a sports club, wanting to raise the profile of an existing club, start a sports club or merely keep fit! I believe I can help you, as the team working, leadership and communication skills I have gained, not only through playing Netball, but in becoming a qualified Netball coach and completing a placement year as part of my degree, make me a great candidate for Sports President 2010.
Manifesto
After four years at UWE, I believe participation in Sports and Societies has ultimately made my University experience! As Sports President for you, I would love the opportunity to help promote ‘Sport for All’ across to ALL students, so that you can encounter the same great experiences I have. I want to help you achieve this by being the vital link needed between the Students and the Union.
As ‘Campaigns Officer’ 2009/10 I have been involved in trying to keep Wednesday afternoons free for Sport. So many of us often prepare ourselves for weekly fixtures, only to find a lecture clashes. University life should be about having the right balance between our academic studies and the chance to represent our University should we chose to. I would like to further this campaign in an attempt to increase participation across Sports, and help promote them into higher BUCS leagues.
I have also been involved in making sure all Sports Clubs and Societies based at St.Matts have somewhere to train before its closure. This needs to continue so that the likes of Clubs such as Ultimate Frisbee and Fencing, to name but a few can continue.
The successful Varsity Series and Sports Awards Dinner is never one to miss! I want to increase awareness of these further and continue their great successes, but more importantly raising the profile of the Sports and Societies night! Remember I’m here to help YOU! ‘Vote Gray all the Way’
Bullet Points
- Promote ‘Sport for All!’
- Increase communication between the Students and the Union.
- Keeping Wednesday afternoons free for Sport participation.
- Helping currently based St.Matts Sports and Societies find new training facilities.
- Use my experiences to improve Varsity Series, Sports Awards Dinner and Sports and Societies night.
Nadia Harding
Personal Statement
As the current UWESU Sports President, I have been working extremely hard to improve your extra-curricular experience at UWE. Many successful projects have been completed, and even more are in progress in conjunction with the sports executive, that have seen sport flourish during the 2009/2010 season.
Alongside my Media and Drama degree, I was the club secretary of the Canoe Club, and participated in regional and national competitions as well as sitting on the sports executive as ‘competitions officer’. These experiences offered a unique insight into how sports and societies operate through effective student leadership and participation.
I have also participated in theatre productions through the UWE CPA. My knowledge of UWE has been broadened further through my time as Student Ambassador.
Being pro-active in student led activities is something I thrive on, and would relish the opportunity to continue to implement the plans initiated this year.
Go Nads!!
Manifesto
Recreational activity is key to enhance your physical, social and academic life. UWE has facilities that deserve to be utilized to offer an adventurous student experience. This can be at competitive level or a simple egg ’n’ spoon race!
What will I do?
- Build upon enthusiasm clubs have for competing in Varsity, with 13 clubs participating in 2010. Embrace that rivalry!
- Maintain pressure on University to ensure Wednesday afternoons remain free for sports and activities.
- Further develop the Disability Group - aid their work in supporting under-represented groups. Organising events with RAG e.g. wheelchair basketball and awareness initiatives such as Sports Relief.
- Review the relationship between the SU and Centre4Sport to enhance the role of sport.
- Are we playing for the love of Sport? We need an environment that encourages wider participation, eliminate social/physical barriers that deter students from taking part.
- Apply pressure on University for additional indoor/outdoor sports facilities, including swimming pool on campus - Support your friends and watch that winning goal!
- I understand the transformations UWE faces - relocation and campus re-developments. Students must be the focus of change and ensure transitions are student led.
- Ensure all campuses are represented – evolve ‘St Matts Relocation Group’ - guarantee we are at the heart of future expansion.
- Promotion is key to encourage participation in sport and we will celebrate our achievements in the sporting and academic world!
University is nothing without YOUR participation - get involved and say...GO NADS!
Bullet Points
- Pursue developments for indoor/outdoor multi-purpose sports facilities and swimming pool – generating stronger community atmosphere.
- Encourage increased membership throughout the year via initiatives such as mid-term discounted prices.
- Develop more recreational sport programs for students at non-competitive levels in addition to BUCS.
- Build upon exceptional participation levels in 2010 Varsity series, continuing to Embrace the Rivalry!
- Encourage the break down of , social/physical barriers that often deter students joining clubs.
No Suitable Candidate
No Suitable Candidate is option if you think none of the other candidates are capable of doing a good job. If NSC wins the election, nominations will re-open, and other people will have the opportunity to put themselves forward for the post.
