Tributes to UWE Skydiver - Iain Firkins

Over 70 tributes to UWE Skydiver Iain Firkins have been posted on a website following his tragic death on Sunday 6th May.

Iain Firkins at Freshers' Fair

Iain, a long standing member of UWE Skydive, was taking part in an Icarus skydiving team demonstration near Newport. Many witnesses to the accident have posted their account of events on a local news site and have paid tribute to Iain's bravery in averting any possible injuries to members of the public.

Iain "deliberately acted to ensure no-one in the crowd was injured or killed by his own misfortune. Iain, we salute your extraordinary bravery and thank you. Your memory will live with us two strangers and many others, forever". (Comment posted on the Shropshire Star website)

Over 70 messages of condolences by witnesses, friends and family have been posted on 2 pages on the Shropshire Star website in the few days since the accident.

Iain, a former CEMS student, joined UWE's IT Services department after graduating, where he worked for 6 years. A page dedicated to Iain has been posted on the UWE website by his former colleagues in ITS.

Iain's contribution to SkydiveUWE was considerable the SU sports office provided the following list of some of his achievements.

Iain was awarded University ½ colours in 2000 - 2001, he was an active part of the club when it was awarded UWE Best Club of the Year 2003 - 2004 (the same year he became Chair of the British Collegiate Parachute Association) & again in 2006 - 2007. Iain was part of the 2nd ever UWESU Freshers' Fair jump & the 1st Skydive Club member to land in the fair. Iain was an integral part of SkydiveUWE for several years & sat on the committee.
