Basketball Women - Most Improved Club 2008
Website
uwe.basketball.co.ukDescription
UWE Women’s Basketball is played in a fun yet competitive environment. The girls work very hard to learn and develop their skills around study and other commitments. The team competes in both the BUCS (university level) and WEBBA (West of England Basketball Association) leagues, and won the tournament trophy in Salou, Spain on their tour in April 2008. The club also holds an end of season varsity game against Bristol University which is a very significant yearly event.
As a member of the club, you will be entitled to free courses in First Aid and Coaching. You will also have the possibility to participate in refereeing and table official courses, as well as being part of a supportive, close-knit and friendly team that will keep you interested in the sport for a long time.
There will be a 1st team selection at the beginning of the season by means of trials. The players selected will be representing UWE in the BUCS league and will be entitled to get fitness assessment. All the other players that would not make the 1st team will be competing in the WEBBA league.
Where they train/meet
We meet twice a week for two hours training sessions at the centre for sports (days and time to be confirmed). Since we compete for both BUCS and WEBBA leagues we normally have two games a week. BUCS games are always on Wednesdays whereas WEBBA games can vary, seeing that it is a local league competition; therefore our home games will be played in one of our training sessions. The meeting place for away games is at the bus stop on Frenchay campus.Socials are held together with the men’s basketball club every fortnight, during term time usually, which include nights out, bowling, ice-skating, going to the cinema, sports tour, camping, day trips etc. Notable socials throughout the year include the Halloween party, Christmas dinner, the Sport Awards dinner, and the end of season Ballers awards ceremony.
Apart from the sports tour mentioned above held in Spain, we are also planning to have some basketball competitions or tournaments and possible training camps throughout the year as well as day trips, such as to a theme park.
There are various basketball volunteering programmes we have participated in this year and are planning to repeat every coming year, such as coaching basketball to kids, wheelchairs basketball event, etc.
