Extenuating Circumstances

What should you do if you have failed to attend or hand in work due to unforeseen circumstances?

If you are ill or something has happened in your personal life that has affected your performance whilst undertaking a part of your course you should submit extenuating circumstances by picking up an extenuating circumstances form from your faculty.

This should be submitted within 5 days of the assessment/exam affected, and you should include evidence of your extenuating circumstance.

Exam boards can only consider the effect of illness or personal problems on your work if you ask them to, using the University procedure.

If you would like any further information or advice about extenuating circumstances or writing to Exam Boards, contact your Students' Union Advice Centre or Students' Union Campus Office. You can also refer to the leaflet entitled 'Writing to the Exam Board', available from the Advice Centre.

APPEALS

You can only appeal within 10 working days of your results being officially published by the faculty if you feel that:

  • There have been extenuating circumstances that for a valid reason you have not been able to inform the exam board of before their meeting
  • There has been a significant administrative or procedural error in the way an assessment was carried out

YOU CANNOT APPEAL ON THE BASIS OF A DISAGREEMENT WITH THE ACADEMIC JUDGEMENT OF THE EXAM BOARD

The procedure for making an appeal is covered in the University Student Handbook and the Students' Union Advice Centre produce an information leaflet, entitled 'Appeals', which you can pick up from the Advice Centre or your Campus Office.

Submitting both extenuating circumstances and academic appeals have time deadlines, so it is important to act quickly. It is not enough that you have had a conversation with a member of staff in your faculty; you must follow the procedures and submit the correct form/letter.

The Advice Centre can help at any stage of these processes so please get in touch with us as soon as you feel something is going wrong.
