NUS Conference is the sovereign body of NUS. It is where the national officers of NUS are elected and where policy for NUS is debated and set.

Why do we have to elected people to go?

Under NUS rules, all Higher Education Union's must elect their delegation by cross-campus ballot to help ensure that the students who attend represent the students at their institution.

Hello UWE! Having had nearly a year and half in my role as Sports President I’m in an advantageous position to vote on what students here at UWE want and need. From talking and listening to UWE Students’, I’ve developed a deep understanding of what our University needs to change, so to improve many more Students’ Experiences. I’ve been active in many projects, including the UWE Federation; Disabled Students; Sports Club members and Campus Chairs plus many more and so therefore I feel that I’m in a good place to truly represent a significant number of UWE Students.

John Quinn

I want to become a delegate so I can fight to keep NUS power in the hands of students.

Hi, I’m your Activities President 07-09.
NUS has been refining its activities, focusing on its key aim of promoting, defending and extending the rights of students; which is a step in the right direction.
With the threat of the £3k cap on tuition fees being lifted in 2009, it’s essential that our National Union has a strong, robust, and sustainable structure to support the fight against this.
I have attended Annual Conference 4 times, so will be able to make sure new delegates understand what is going on, as it can be intimidating for first time delegates.

I wish to become a UWESU delegate for NUS conferences in order to support and promote the Campaign to Defeat Fees, launched by Socialist Students, which calls for the scrapping of all student debt and the return to free higher education. In the face of government plans to increase tuition fees to £10,000 per year, we call on the NUS to support this campaign. I also oppose the undemocratic ‘governance review’, which NUS leadership is still trying to push through despite being rejected at conference last year. Please also support Socialist Students candidates Arran Cottam and Paul Moorhouse.

Paul Moorhouse

A mature student, I have been a socialist and trade unionist for 30 years. Students need a strong, democratic and independent representative body:
STRENGTH: NUS has 5,000,000 members, if only 10% of these were mobilised on a national demonstration government plans to increase fees to £10k a year could be defeated.
DEMOCRACY: The NUS leadership have launched a ‘governance review’ proposing drastic changes in our constitution, undermining democracy, which I oppose.
INDEPENDENCE: Too many NUS leaders use our union as a ‘stepping stone’ to careers as Labour MPs, compromising independence.
Please vote for SOCIALIST STUDENTS candidates: Arran Cottam/John Yeandle.

I am passionate about everything student. If I get the chance to represent UWE at NUS Conferences I will aim to provide the best experience for our students as possible. This may include voting on capping top-up fee’s, equal opportunities for minority groups and expelling violence and racism in universities across the UK.
I will work towards creating a system whereby all students know, understand and participate in Student’s Union events and have the chance to get involved and be heard. It is important to me that every single student studying at UWE gets the most out of their degree.

Arran Cottam

Having been involved in NUS for four years, I have seen what happens to it if it is not pushed by its membership to be a radical fighting force for students.
The NUS could have defeated Top-up Fee’s in 2003 instead they built a small ineffective campaign that was bound to fail.
As a passionate believer in free education and a socialist I will be able to try and push the NUS into a better position on fighting fee’s.
Please vote for SOCIALIST STUDENTS candidates: Paul Moorehouse/John Yeandle

It is a fundamental part of my role as an elected representative of UWESU students for this academic year to ensure this institution is represented. This includes here at UWE and on a national level. Students of UWE need to send delegates to conferences who will fight for their voice as opposed to solely representing their own opinions, that is what I’m here to do and what I intend to do if I get elected as an NUS delegate.

Dom Passfield

‘Dom’s no Con’! (but be sure to use a con-dom!)
For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Dom, your re-elected President at UWE Students’ Union. So what is NUS? That was definitely what I used to wonder as new student, it just seemed to be a discount card. But the National Union of Students is so much more than that, they just need to focus on thier most important asset, the members, us! My commitment to you and UWE if I’m elected is to make sure YOUR interests are listened to at a national level.

I want to become a delegate for NUS conferences because it’s such a good opportunity to get involved in the big issues that affect all students nationally. I want to make sure that the NUS is supporting and representing students appropriately and that we get the NUS we want. This will be my 5th year at UWE and my 4th as a student rep. I’ve been involved in a whole range of councils in both my faculty and across the university and believe that having a strong representation system is vital in ensuring student view and needs are communicated effectively.

Claire Barber

I'm passionate about advocating the rights of th people I represent, for a cause I believe in. I'm familiar with the workings of the conference, having attended twice before. I'm currently studying Adult Nursing. I have a background in PR and Project Management and have the confience, skills and know-how to represent UWE students at national level.

Sanjay Mistry

I’m a final year student studying Pharmaceutical sciences and have been working for UWE Student union for the past 5 years. I represented UWE Students at last year’s NUS Annual Conference and I helped me better changes to the NUS for students. I will aim to do the same again and vote to reform the NUS to make it more representative for students and more the student voice more vocal – leading to changes for students!
I will do all I can to make sure the cap on tuition fees remain and therefore allowing a better student experience for all!

Amad Baig Mirza

To represent my college and to find out what does this conference offer to students and how students can bring this experience back to their collegues and the university. It will help us in our future development as well.
