Membership Categories, Benefits and the Conditions
The types of membership and the benefits that can be expected from each along with the conditions that must be followed.
4. Categories of Membership
There shall be the following categories of membership:
4.1 Full Members:
All students registered on programmes of study with the University shall be entitled to be full members of the Union. All such students shall be deemed to be in membership with the exception of any student who advises the University that they wish to exercise their right under the Education Act 1994
not to be a member. The procedures relating to the exercise of this right and to pursue a complaint against the Union are shown in Law 1.
4.2 Associate Members:
All members of the staff of the University and the Union shall be entitled to be associate members of the Union.
4.3 Affiliate Members:
All students in membership of other student organisations shall be deemed to be affiliate members of the Union.
4.4 Temporary Members:
Any person who is duly introduced by a full member of the Union for the purpose of attending a function or event will be deemed to be a temporary member for the duration of that event or function.
5. Benefits of Membership
5.1 Full Members shall be entitled:
- To serve as a student representative;
- To participate in the process by which student representatives are chosen and appointed;
- To participate in the process by which the views of students are identified and considered and policy formulated;
- To join and participate in all activities facilitated by the Union;
- To the use of all Union facilities and services.
5.2 Associate Members shall be entitled:
- To use all Union facilities and services subject to such constraints as the Board of Trustees may from time to time apply which may include providing preferential access to full members of the Union;
- To join and participate in all activities facilitated by the Union subject to the condition that Associate Members are prohibited from holding office or serving as a committee member or representative of any activity facilitated by the Union and that the Board of Trustees

may, as they deem appropriate, introduce terms and conditions for participation which vary to those which apply to full members of the Union.
5.3 Affiliate Members shall be entitled:
- To use all Union facilities and services subject to such constraints as the Board of Trustees may from time to time apply which may include providing preferential access to full members of the Union;
- To join and participate in all activities facilitated by the Union subject to the condition that Affiliate Members are prohibited from holding office or serving as a committee member or representative of any activity facilitated by the Union and that the Board of Trustees, Sports Council, and Activities Council may, as they deem appropriate, introduce terms and conditions for participation which vary to those which apply to full members of the Union.
5.4 Temporary Members shall be entitled:
To the use of Union facilities for the duration of the period for which they have been enrolled as a temporary member.
5.5 Social Club Members:
The members of the Union shall be the members of the Social Club and shall be entitled to use the facilities and services of the Social Club in accordance with Law 2.
6. Conditions of Membership
The above benefits of membership are conditional on the proper conduct of members and such benefits may be withdrawn in accordance with Law 3.
