Our comedy video of RAG balloon release has gone viral on the web.
In the last couple of days, last year’s RAG balloon release has gone somewhat global on the web. The video http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3wZW7_4p98k has been reposted on various other websites generating hundreds of thousands of views.
On one website, it has had over 300,000 views and over 500 comments. We have even been contacted by CNN, who have asked for more information so that it could (possibly) be shown on national, primetime American TV!
The balloon release took place on Valentine’s Day 2007 and was only the second event run by the newly formed Raise and Give Society at the University of the West of England. At the time the students were raising money for three charities (Children in Need, Health Unlimited and National Aids Trust).
Tickets were sold and each one was attached to a balloon; the prize of music vouchers was to be given to the person whose balloon traveled the furthest after being released. Obviously there were a few problems in that department! In the end, the winner’s balloon traveled over a100 miles to the South Coast of England.
The RAG committee itself have grown hugely since that event and in the 2007-2008 academic year raised over £5,000 for various charities and have over 40 volunteers helping put on events.
The video was recorded and published by student video editor, Alex Davis.
