UWE People and Planet is part of a nationwide network of student groups who campaign about issues affecting the environment, human rights, world poverty and stand against all forms of oppression.
We work to educate ourselves about issues within our own People and Planet group and raise awareness within the local student population in Bristol and in the wider local and national community.
Last year we were involved in campaigns such as Buy Nothing Day where we set up a free shop in the centre of Broadmead and engaged members of the public about issues of consumerism. We were a key part of the successful protest to drop Shell as the sponsor of the British Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition at Bristol Natural History Museum. There were several successful stunts for this campaign such as protesters dressing up as polar bears outside the museum and an animal die-in amongst the exhibition! We were also involved in organising activities for the University’s sustainability week including clothes swap, bike workshop, movie showings and more. We also successfully passed environmental policies at the AGM.
