Haha! That brings back memories of my time at uni. I have to admit, there were a few lectures where I ended up not going because I could simply read the slides for myself in ten minutes and understand all that they were going to talk about for an hour.

Great group, though soon if universities get their way it could be £20,000/yr to listen to lecturers read their powerpoints :P

I recall a lecture following a feedback session in which we, as a group, were told off for being negative about lecturers doing that. Hooray for engaging with the feedback process :D

I do not agree with you.
Yes, you can read the powerpoint presentation but this is not all.
They are talking and giving more details than just the few sentences into the presentations.
Also if this is such a problem for you - talk with those lecturers and confront them.

What are you studying?

...And then when it comes to being assessed, we have to go away and find 8 million books to support our essay - gods forbid that they actually TEACH us everything that we need to know!

This is the key difference between school and university. You ARE expected to take control of your own learning and you will NOT be taught "everything you need to know". They will teach you enough to scrape 40%, if you want to do well you need to go away and read up about it. Hence why a "full time" course has a small amount of face to face teaching and the rest of the time is meant to be used for reading and self study.

University is a small step between school and the real academic world. How are you planning to keep up with current research when you leave university if you rely on someone to tell you everything? The sooner you realise this the happier you will feel about your course, I know it took me a while to appreciate exactly what I'd learnt during my three years.

What about freedom of speech? Are we not allowed to comment on such situations?
