Steve West appointed UWE Vice Chancellor
On Monday 7th January, an appointment was made public at UWE that will have a monumental effect on all aspects of University life, including your student experience.
In July of this year Sir Howard Newby, the then Vice Chancellor (i.e. the person that runs the whole University) announced that he had been appointed the same position at Liverpool University and thus was leaving UWE. This had a very strong effect on UWE as a whole, as Newby’s brief time here had been controversial and difficult for many staff, thus affecting students.
In the interim period, once Newby had left, Steve West, then the Deputy Vice Chancellor was appointed as Acting Vice Chancellor. The decision was made by the UWE Board of Governors, of which Dom Passfield, Student Representative President is a member. Dom was then appointed as the student voice on the search committee charged with the mission of appointing a new Vice Chancellor. In the last 5 months Dom has been involved in the appointment process of a new permanent Vice Chancellor. This has seen him take part in the many aspects from the head-hunting committee, long listing and short listing sessions, trips to London and more importantly face to face interviewing. Dom also organised sessions with students groups for the final 3 candidates and then more importantly was part of the final decision.
It is with great pleasure that we inform you that Steve West, previous Dean of Health and Social Care has been appointed as the permanent Vice Chancellor of UWE. His reign begins immediately and he has guaranteed to make sure that the student voice in UWE is heard. He has the full support of the Students’ Union and has shown his loyalty to UWE and the organisation, particularly when he donned his scuba gear outfit for the SU’s rag week, as pictured.

Dom Passfield said ‘The whole process was an extremely difficult one with many complicated aspects, but I am extremely pleased with the result, Steve will do a fantastic job! I look forward to seeing his true colours and making sure you the students stay at the top of the University’s agenda as promised in my manifesto’.
