Choose the time of the next AGM!
1.30pm to 3.30pm or 5.30pm to End? YOU DECIDE!
Dear Student
As many of you know, the Students’ Union Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place with great success on the 29th November last year. The AGM is the most important date in the SU’s diary as it is the highest decision making body in our organisation.
Now that it is the New Year the time has come for the Students’ Union officers to begin planning the next meeting.
The first and most important choice that must be made is the time and date of the actual meeting. There have been many criticisms over the years about the time and date of the AGM, this due to huge diversity and complexity of a University with 30,000 students, all of whom have different timetables and commitments.
This year, the Presidents have decided that the AGM should take place again at the end of November. This is because it is the most ‘active’ time for most students, and fits conveniently between exam periods, term dates and UWE commitments. But as to the actual time of the event we are giving you, the membership, the opportunity to tell us when you want the AGM to take place.
There are 2 viable options which we would like you to consider. They will sadly not suit all students, but they are the best possibilities to please the largest majority of students. Please select either option 1 or option 2 depending on what you prefer and we shall be in touch soon with the outcome.

Option 1
1.30pm to 3.30pm
This is the time the AGM has taken place for the last few years. This time in effect, cancels all UWE lectures and seminars during that slot. This gives creditability and reflects the importance of the AGM. But it has been seen to be to the suffering of some academic courses that fail to take AGM into consideration. This time also excludes a large majority of placement students who find either taking the time off or moving shifts considerably difficult, if not impossible. This time does also carry the restriction of a two hour slot. This holds the meeting to time, but can restrict the amount of business that takes place. This time slot also captures students who are in University at that point, potentially increasing numbers.
Option 2
5.30pm to End
The second viable option is to hold the meeting at 5.30 in the evening until the meeting ends or loses the number of people needed to carry on. This time will potentially allow a majority of placement students to attend or change shift to guarantee attendance. We are also now in a position, with prior notice to potentially offer free child-care within the UWE nurseries. This option also offers decreased academic disruption by only having to cancel lectures and seminars for the last hour of teaching in the evening. This option also allows us to look at the concept of an AGM after party, using some of the Students’ Union facilities to our advantage. But the evening time may be less appealing to students who need to travel long distance or have other commitments.
