Do you rent from a private landlord?

If so, do you have more than three storeys to your house and are there 5 or more of you in the property?

If you have answered yes to all of these questions, the property may be classed as a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) and may need to be licensed.

This is the landlord’s responsibility and they should apply for a licence to make sure that the property is safe and well managed.

Bristol City Council are currently carrying out spot checks to see if properties that ought to be licensed actually are, so you may have someone knock on your door in the next few weeks asking you a few questions.

ALWAYS ask them for their ID as all genuine employees will be carrying this and will not be offended if you ask to see it. Never let anyone into your house if you are unsure of who they really are.

If you think your house ought to be licensed then you can contact UWESU Advice Centre for more basic information on HMO’s in the first instance at: advice@uwe.ac.uk
