Five good reasons why you should run for the Students’ President Position.

	Do you know that as the SU President;

		You automatically become the Figurehead of the Students’ Union,

		You coordinate supports and ensure that the elected officers, the Executive, fulfil their responsibilities,

		You act as the primary contacts for the University, the National Union of Students and the Media,

		You are the student member of the Board of Governors and Co-chair of the Students Governor Forum,

		Attends the National Union of Students Annual Conference as a delegate leader,

		Together with the General Manager implement the strategic plan for the Union.

	Below is my report from January 2, 2013 till date

	VC Explains- a two part Series event aimed at bringing the VC to students, making things transparent and informative, improve communications from UWE to its students, members engagement, participation and involvement in the Union’s activities.

	UWESU is providing a unique experience for students to get up close and personal with the boss, the manager, the top bloke of UWE-Steve West-The Vice-Chancellor.

	You can quiz, present ideas and find out more about the main man himself. To most students Steve West will be a name or picture on the UWE website, or a glimpse of a man in a suit walking down a campus corridor, so how about finding out more about the boss of UWE and getting a chance to quiz him?

	Series 1 - Steve West on Hub Radio – 7th February 15:00-16:00

	Steve ‘The Don’ West appeared on the Hubradio on the 7th February 2013 from 15:00-16:00, an hour of questions, music and chat. He spoke about his views on UWE, University life and snippets of what it’s like to be a Vice-Chancellor of a 30,000 student university.

	Series 2 - UWE Dragon’s Den –Friday 22nd February 14:00-16:00

	Got a gripe with UWE? Think you could do it better? How about pitching your idea on how to improve UWE to Steve and a panel of ‘Dragons’ in UWESU’s part two of the VC Explain series- UWE’s Dragon’s Den on February 22nd 2013 14:00-16:00 in 2Q49. Your Ideas. Your Pitch. His investment. Make your mark at UWE and change something for the better. Not for you? Come along and watch your friends, course mates and fellow students pitch ideas to the ‘Dragons’. Vote on which idea you think is the best and worst, and find out exactly what Steve West thinks of them!

	You can get involved with the VC Explain series in loads of different ways...

	JOIN IN-Submit your idea, present to a panel of judges for the chance to change UWE for the better

	Student Governor Forum – a successful hosting of the Student Governor Forum Which help in conveying the real student experience to the key decision makers at UWE. At the Forum; The Research Impact strand discussed the importance of research to keep staff passion alive as well as exposing students to the best research. The group discussed how to see value for money for research as well as the need to publish research within departments regardless of the intended purpose. The group talked about the interaction between research and teaching quality, ensuring that PhD students with teaching responsibilities are also encouraged to undertake teaching qualifications.

	On the ready and able graduate, the students want the university to come up with a strong strategy on producing graduates with global mine-set; this they believe will make UWE’s graduate competitive with their counterpart anywhere in the world.

	The Civic engagement and leadership strand prompted discussion on inspiring younger generations to see university as a real and positive option as well as opening up and encouraging the local communities to use facilities on campus. The group also spoke about effective placement support and post graduate employment within the Bristol area.

	The final discussion centred on communications, ensuring there is an awareness of activities already taking place within UWE. The students also want UWE to see them (the students’ union) as their major strategic partner considering their contributions in enhancing students’ experience (providing leadership skills, extra-curricular activities in sport, societies, etc), and want this to be reflected on UWE’S new strategic plan.

	Post Graduate Focus Group: Last week I organised a Post Graduate focus group, to find out more about the issues that affect this group of students. This session also gave the students an opportunity to influence the Students' Union's and & UWE’s future strategy that I am currently working on.

	Students re-sit charge abolished - Successfully helped lobby the University to review the £50 module re-sit charge, and subsequently abolish exam fees on students. This means that, a small number of students who have incurred re-sit charges relating to this academic year will be reimbursed. However, students with debt relating to re-sit charges from previous years will continue to be chased for payment by credit control.

<a10:updated>2013-02-13T14:24:30Z</a10:updated>

New Year Message

	Strategic Review of the Students’ Union - where are we?

	The strategic review of the Union activities has kicked start in earnest with the hiring of a consultant (Alterline Research) to conduct the research and act as a critical friend in the strategic planning process. Mean while, a survey had been sent around which most of you had taken sometimes to complete which is a good thing to start with. And we are hoping to have a workshop on re-strategy review today (05/12/2012).

	In order to arrive at an informed and actionable strategic plan you will agree with me that, the Union needs to understand current student sentiment regarding the Union’s offer and evaluate students’ needs for the future. And so the Union Strategy priorities will focus on students’ experience, which is what the union is all about - serving you better.

	Student Governor Forum

	At the just concluded (22/10/2012) Student Governor Forum, feedbacks were received from the student/ Governors where the meeting was split up into different groups in order to facilitate discussions. It was evident that some students were happy with their experience of the university but others indentified key issues which came within three areas: registration and enrolment especially for first year students, time table difficulties especially for the returning students, impact of attendance policy and its outcomes which might be different across the faculties.

	I will continue to lobby the university to ensure that, there are planed action activities put in place in order to correct these anomalies and improve the student experience here at UWE. I am also committed to ensuring that the Student Governor Forum becomes a key role for the Executive Committee in conveying the real student experience to the key decision makers at UWE, and will regularly update you on any issues taken at this forum.

	AGM

	Through summer training we developed as a team and have made certain that we are effective in decision making, that we have developed a culture whereby we can hold one another to account on a professional level, and that we are representing the views of students to the best of our ability. We also agreed to carry our activist along in any thing we do. This is evident in the success we have recoded so far (including the team bonding) and from the feedback from the last AGM where we’ve had much more pleasant motion this year than the previous years. A couple of motion fell while some were carried. One of such that were carried is the motion on the ‘re-introduction of the second student governor position. I will lobby the Board of Governor for a formal response on this.

	Due to the quoracy, the following discussions items were not discussed and the motion holders will be asked if they want to take them to Student Council: Student Accommodation, Inspire a Generation, Students’ Union Block Grant, Union Communication, Commission on Democratic Reform, No Platform for Fascism, and Defend the Right to Protest.

	The draft minutes for the AGM will go back to the next AGM for rectification.

	#Demo2012

	Many of you I’m sure were involved in making #demo2012 a day to remember. The demo which was colourful had our (UWE) activist in attendance along with other students from across the nation. One of the key questions we are confronted with, as I’m sure you’re all aware, is how do we as a student movement channel the passion of those who marched on 21st into campaigns on our campuses and in our communities throughout the UK, to make a real difference to students’ lives?.

	I have been busy planning next steps for our union and students after the demo and have start putting together a calendar of campaigns and campaigning actions around education, employment and empowerment for our students to get involved in, shape and take forward.

	Christmas in the Air...

	I would like to conclude by offering you my earnest prayer to you all this season. May this Christmas end the present year in a cheerful note and make way for a fresh and bright new year. Here’s wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

<a10:updated>2012-12-05T13:33:22Z</a10:updated>

Summer Update

“Firstly may I congratulate all new students on achieving their exam results and securing a place at UWE. Hi, my name is Emmanuel Okon; your elected President and Chair of the UWESU Executive Committee for 2012/13. On behalf of everyone in the UWE Students’ Union executive team, I’d like to welcome all the new and returning students back to UWE and Bristol. The Students’ Union is here to make your voice bolder, louder and stronger by lobbing, campaigning and representing you.

My role is to ensure that you are regularly engaged with and that your views, issues, opinions, etc are represented to the University. I therefore call on all students to take ownership of your Union and seize all the available opportunities for involvement and development. Please feel free to drop by anytime, or if you see me walking around campus, stop me to say hi and tell me how things are going! I’m always keen to find out what your views are and what you want changed or improved. My office is at 4th Floor F-Block, UWESU Frenchay Campus, or calls me at Tel: 0117 328 251, or drop me an email at supresident@uwe.ac.uk

Over the summer, I’ve had the privileged of attending graduation ceremony (as a VIP based on my role as your president) which was a good experience. The Vice Presidents and I also attended a vast array of training and conferences including; Belbin team role training, Lead and Change (Active Political Leadership), Student as Governor, academic affairs, university level negotiation, Train the trainer, Delivering change, Parliamentary Outreach, Finance – Scenarios - Equality and Diversity, Quality Matters Conference, Staff day out at Bower Ashton.

The Vice Presidents and I also gave roughly 50 induction talks over the last couple of weeks and I had the opportunity to show UWE Governors (including the Vice Chancellor) and UWESU Trustees the spectacle of UWESU Freshers’ Fair, all of whom left congratulating the SU on our work in enhancing the student experience. UWE fresher’s fair is unarguably the biggest fresher’s fair in the UK, and we are proud of that!

Our new Board of Trustees has met for the first time over summer which has been critical to UWESU’s development since the new makeup of the board features external trustees for the first time. We also had a successful hosting of NUS ‘Lead and Change’ training course in UWE, Bristol. The event was attended by over 300 Presidents across the country including the NUS Officers.

I kick start my role as the Student Union President by having a tour around the five campuses of UWE with the aim of understanding and having good working relationship with both the campus officers and the staffs. This tour also offer me the opportunity of seeing things to myself and equipping me with fact and figures, knowing our university and students issues better and presenting such rightly when the need arises.

Our new website has massively been revamped and updated with new features and is now up and running. You will be aware of some teething problems with getting it up and running however out media team are continually developing the website and it’s coming along nicely. Feedback from the executive about the next steps of the development is welcome.

UWE Global Gathering 2012

Really good being part of the global gathering, welcoming new international students to UWE, Bristol, UK. The event was put together by the Global Students’ Support of UWE, Bristol and hade in attendance the Vice Chancellor, Steve West who welcomed all the new international students to UWE on behalf of the UWE’s management and congratulated them on achieving their exam results, and securing a place at UWE.

The VC Explain forum

I’m currently working with UWE’s marketing department to develop a communication link between the students and UWE Management. This is aimed at breaking barriers and making things more transformative, transparent between the students and the UWE Management.

Already the following dates and time has been chosen for this event and you are requested to send us your honest feedback and also actively participate. This event is free for all UWE’s students, so get involve making change happen. Remember; YOU ARE THE CHANGE! Venue: TBC.

Mayor Election

I am now leading/ campaigning to encourage as many students as possible to register to vote in the first elected Bristol’s Mayor on the 15th November, 2012, together with an election for Police/ Crime Commissioner. We (me and UWESU media) are in the process of creating a webpage, posters, newsletters, flyers, etc for the promotion of this event. The Mayor will replace the current council leader to lead the city council and its full range of services, and represent the interests of Bristol citizens (this is an entirely different role to that of the “Lord Mayor”). While the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) will replace the local police authority. They will be responsible for producing a police and crime plan setting out local policing priorities, setting the annual budget and appointing the chief constable and holding them to account.

National Demo 2012 title announced by NUS President

There is no doubt the fact that this year is going to be a tough one in line with the increase of tuition fees. The increase in fees is a key issue and call for concern to every student. The NUS has call for a National demonstration against this government act and we have been mandated to support it. The Title for the 2012 NUS’ National demonstration has been confirmed as ‘Educate, Employ, Empower’ The announcement was made by NUS President Liam Burns to a room of student leaders at the NUS ‘Lead and Change’ training course in UWE, Bristol.

Please see the deceleration by the NUS President here and click here to watch Liam Burns blog video. Watch the video here

Flyers done, coaches booked, working group established, trade unions’ contacted, All done!....wow

“UWESU are committed to continually improving and enhancing the student experience. The Demo is a chance for us to take the fight on cuts to the government rather than waiting for them to impose more injustice on the student body. Prevention is better than cure and now is the perfect time for UWESU to support the NUS and our student activists in pushing the agenda”.

This is to express my profound gratitude to our entire students’ activists who has been so helpful in working with the executive team toward the success of this demo. As your President I shall be leading this campaign, and I need your support too. So please join our facebook group and give us your honest feedback. Remember your involvement in our activities and honest feedback will help us serve you better. Visit our website at www.uwesu.org for updates on any issues.

Support for London Metropolitan University and International Students

The Home Office’s recent decision to revoke London Metropolitan University’s Highly Trusted Status (HTS) means that over 2000 international students studying in this university will have to either find a new institution within the next 60 days, or face the risk of deportation without completing their degrees through no fault of their own. This is deeply distressing to not only this students, but to the future of other international students in the country. In solidarity with these students, I’ve been working hand-in-hand with Ayoola (the president of London Metropolitan University Students’ Union) to see how this issues is been resolve amicably by the Home office, we also released a statement challenging this decision, which lack judgment to make it clear that this represents a continuation of the Government’s unpleasant approach to international students.

A Review of the Students’ Union Strategic Plan

In order to serve our students better, we shall continue to collaborate with NUS and foster a stronger partnership with the University of the West of England and be seen to add value to their strategy. Talking about strategic review, we are in the process of carrying out a review of the Students’ Union Strategic Plan.

I am also working with the university’s strategic team to see how they (university) can align (so that they take account of each other where appropriate) their strategic plan with ours as we are refreshing our strategic plan for 2013. I am happy to announce that at the moment, a consultant has been contracted (after screening) to carry out the review of our (Students’ Union) strategic plan. Before we talk about where we are now, I would like to take us through the memory lane (the journey so far) since 2010.

(i)               Development for 2010/11

The Union reviewed its strategic plan in the spring of 2010 and the departments of the Union have set out their departmental plans and objectives for 2010/11 based on that plan. In addition the Presidents of the Union have identified their own individual and team objectives based on both the strategic plan and their manifesto pledges. We have identified from the above the following objectives that are going to be the priorities for 2010/11.

To ensure the Union makes a surplus in 2010/11.

(ii)             Developments for 2011/12

The Union reviewed its strategic plan in the spring of 2010 and the departments of the Union have set out their departmental plans and objectives for 2011/12 based on that plan. In addition the Officers of the Union have identified their own individual and team objectives based on both the strategic plan and their manifesto pledges. We have identified from the above the following objectives that are going to be the priorities for 2011/12:

  Effective implementation of our new governance structures;

  Demonstrate the value of the new officer post of VP Community & Welfare;

  Consult with all stakeholders to ensure that any new building for the Union is the best we can achieve;

  Consolidate the changes made last year as a result of incorporation, charity registration, staffing structure and staff benefits;

1. Following on from the surplus made in 2010/11 to ensure a stable financial basis for the future; and

2. Represent the views of students to the University and other stakeholders on matters regarding the student experience.

(iii)           Objectives for 2012/13

So where are we now? Here are some thoughts for the year ahead.

  Review of our Strategic plan;

  Planning for a new building;

  Permanent University funding for 5<sup>th</sup> Officer;

  Focus more resources on website;

  Likewise for Community & Welfare / Reps;

Stable financial basis for the future;

<a10:updated>2012-10-17T21:28:06+01:00</a10:updated>

My priorities for the year ahead

	Over summer I have sought one to one sessions with most of you which I feel have been beneficial if only to touch base, share ideas, and develop priorities. I am keen to continue doing this throughout the year to ensure that voluntary members of the Executive Committee have enough support to achieve everything they set out to and likewise the Vice Presidents.

	 As side from my campaign manifesto, below are some of my key priorities for this year (2012).

		Improve the student experience through improved communications from UWE to its students.

		Help students to identify key messages where action is required from those which are nice to know or marketing messages.

		 Defend access, widening participation and support for students in Higher Education. Support the work of the Executive Committee

		 Lobby as well as work with UWE in the development of a new Students’ Union Building

		 Secure a financial surplus and in doing so financial stability for the SU for future officers

		Together with the Executive secure funding in the long term for the sustainability of Vice President Community and Welfare post

		Increase engagement with our AGM, National Conference Delegation, Voting and lobbying opportunities.

		Re-instate the position of Student Governor for the next academic year.

		Ensure that the Student Governor Forum in its new form becomes a key role for the Executive Committee in conveying the real student experience to the key decision makers at UWE.

		Engaging with the fee level setting for the next academic year, ensuring fairness, equality and support a driver in the decision making process.

		Partnering with UWE to identify the future needs of students with regards to engineering and technology enhanced learning at UWE

<a10:updated>2012-10-12T12:16:47+01:00</a10:updated>

Making the most out of your Tuition fees and Student Experience in UWE, Bristol

	We are aware of the fact that, there is greater demand on us (the Students’ Union) in line with fees increase to aide students’ retention and student’s experience (greater accountability with academic feedback, delivery in terms of teaching and learning supports, bursary, etc). In order to serve you better, we shall continue to collaborate with NUS, and foster a stronger partnership with the University of the West of England and be seen to add value to their strategy.

	Talking about increase in fees (which is the main key issues to all students this year), I present the full figures in the interest of accountability and transparency to show areas and how your money is spent by the University, so you have the breakdown and more of the descriptions in the table below. It should be noted that, this is based on 2010/11 financial year given this is latest for which the data was available but the investment/ spend year on year as a proportion remains pretty much the same each year. In a University that is research intensive much more of this spend would be on a university’s research i.e. none- teaching or learning resources – whereas UWE would spend more on the latter.

	Much of what is happening in the Higher Education Sector is out of UWE’s hands, however it has been comforting to hear members of the board of Governors agreeing that support, access and student representation at UWE must remain priorities at UWE. With the increase in fees this year, the University have pledged to provide over 1000 bursaries totalling over £9 million to students to aid with their studies as well as introducing extra support mechanisms and increased student internships.

	Students’ Union, who are we and what do we do

	The Students’ Union is an organisation run by students for students, providing a whole range of services and opportunities for it’s over 30,000 members.

	Most students think that the Students’ Union is all about bars, well, these are just part of our services. Do you know that students help to run the university? Oh yes; students are elected from each course to represent student views at university meetings ensuring your views are heard. The Students’ Union runs its own advice services to help you through your time at UWE. We recognise that many students have child-care responsibilities, so we help by running a Nursery at Frenchay campus providing professional services on which student parents can rely. We also run and participate in a whole range of sports, societies and networks, community and welfare activities, as well as provide a number of shops across our campuses. Our Students’ Union employs around 300 students each year as casual staff.

	Opportunities available for students

	The Union create opportunities for volunteers to get involved in the running and organising of the Students’ Union in areas such as the students’ paper you are reading now, campaigns, entertainments and special events such as Freshers’ Fair and Bristol boat race. Our student course representatives (or ‘Student Reps’) are trained by the students’ union to develop skills in committee work, negotiation, public speaking, etc. These skills you would agree with me will apply throughout your career and life. There is also an opportunity for you to elect people to run the Union on a day to day basis each year.

	Only through our members will UWE Students’ Union become one of the most effective in the UK, and together hope will never be silent. We therefore call on all students to take ownership of your union and size all the available opportunities for development and involvement.

	Name:

	Emmanuel Okon

	Course:

	Master of Business Administration (MBA)

	Q. How did you get involved?

	I arrived from Nigeria to the UK in 2008 and realised that, there are a lot of issues, challenges face by the international students (being one myself) so I decided to join the GLOBAL STUDENTS SUPPORT TEAM; acting as a global students mentor, helping new international students to adjust to the social and academic culture of the university, supporting the transition and integration of the new international students into the university and Bristol community, acting as resources to the mentee, Providing insights to the university’s policies, procedures and programmes. In 2010, I together with some friends decided to form the Nigerian Students Network in order to create a forum that brings Nigerians together in order to foster unity, promote Nigerian culture and create a sense of belonging to Nigerian Students. promote Nigerian culture and create a sense of belonging

	Along the way I acted/ became the International student’s representative. This position offered me the opportunity to interact, engage with a diverse group of students. I am also a proud Student Ambassador of the university.

	Q. What are your plans for the year?

	I will ensure that all students are able to participate in the democratic processes and representation structures of the union, increase more opportunities for our students to come together through activities, societies, networks, etc thereby Making UWE an all inclusive University. Lobby to make sure that the student’s voice, concerns, views, and ideas are heard: this is your university, your experience; you matter most.

	Q. So what influence your decision to study at UWE, Bristol?

	What really influenced my choice of UWE was what both the University and the Students’ Union has to offer. These included; extensive and excellent teaching facilities, good environment, laboratories, lecture halls, an excellent library and online resources. Others included, the radio station, newspapers, sports clubs, societies, networks, advice centre, JobShop, bars, shops, student course reps, events, etc all run by students for students, and the fact that, UWE is in the south west of England, the HUB of defence companies and the Aerospace/ space industries in the UK, this include; Airbus, Rolls-Royce, MOD, meaning that UWE plays an important role in this global market.

	I believe going to University is much more than just getting a degree. There is an entire lifestyle that comes with being a student although studying is a big part of it. During both my undergraduate in BEng (Hons) Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering and postgraduate in Master of Business Administration(MBA) studies at UWE, I have been involved in numerous group activities, and have had the privilege of serving in many different capacities including: International Students Representative to the UWESU (2009/2010); President of the UWE Nigerian Students Network (2010 – 2012); Member of the UWE Equality and Diversity Committee (2009); Global Student Support Mentor (2010 - 2012); Member of UWE Constitution Review Committee (2009); Member UWESU Students’ in Council (2011/12), UWE’ Student Ambassador (2008 – till date) just to mention a few.

	As a result of taking up the aforementioned roles, I have acquired several transferable skills including the ability to effectively relate with students from diverse backgrounds as well as, good inter-personal and communication skills. I have also developed good problem solving skills and an ability to influence decisions at all levels, especially as it relates to student-management issues.

	UWE has much to offer, and has been my family for many years now and I believe it is going to be yours throughout your journey here in Bristol if you decide to come.

	Bristol is a dynamic, cosmopolitan European city that is packed full of exciting attractions. The city draws its inspiration from Brunel’s creativity and innovation, and is determined to share an enviable quality of life with its visitors including you.

	Outside of my studies, I find time to play golf, table/lawn tennis, kickboxing, chess, and poker as well as listen to jazz and classical music.

<a10:updated>2012-10-12T12:09:00+01:00</a10:updated>
