Up and coming projects...
The Big Beach Clean Saturday 20 March 2010, 09.00-17.00
Join us for the biggest action day of the year, at the beach at Weston-Super-Mare. We spend the day walking on the beach and exploring the sand dunes, as we pick up all the litter. The beach is cleaned mechanically, but the wind blows litter into some hard to reach places, and last year we picked up over thirty sacks of rubbish.
It is hard work but a fun day out, and we will ensure there is plenty of food and drink to keep you going! FREE coach transport will run from Frenchay Campus via the city centre to the beach. We're also looking for event stewards to help us run the day!
For more information get in touch with Helen Seacombe, Volunteer Support Officer: helen.seacombe@uwe.ac.uk
Sport Relief Extravaganza Friday 19th March
Help us to steward an amazing Red and Retro event for Sport Relief. We need volunteers to help run and supervise the event.
Roles will include manning the tuck shop; stewarding events such as badminton, climbing and sumo wrestling as well as an old school style sports day! Also collecting money on the door and publicising the event by flyering before the day.
Email helen.seacombe@uwe.ac.uk for more information.
If you have lots to do already but fancy doing something completely different for the day get involved.
Volunteering in your community can change your perspective, get you away from your studies, and you get to meet loads of new people, have fun and try something new!
There will be lots of opportunitites to get active and try out some volunteering in 2009/'10.
And as always if you have any ideas for projects or volunteering you'd like to try out, get in touch with Helen Seacombe your Volunteer Support Officer.

Christmas Shoebox Project
Last Christmas UWE students and staff prepared more than 50 shoeboxes full of presents for children in orphanages in Bulgaria. The boxes were sent to Bulgaria through a local charity CORF (UK Registered Charity No:1070467)
Winterbourne Barn Conservation Volunteering
Last year we were lucky to get involved with a local medieval barn, built in the thirteenth century! Volunteers went there regularly on a Saturday to do some conservation work and help with the upkeep of the barn.
Sports Days
Over the last couple of years a range of sports clubs from UWE including netball, women's football, volleyball, fencing and more, led a sports day at the Centre for Sport at UWE for children from several schools in Bristol. The student volunteers ran sessions and shared their sporting skills, while the children got to try some new sports and get a taste of uni life. Fun was had by all!
Spring Swap Shop
As part of National Student Volunteer Week 2009 many students took part in a swap shop and alongside this made money for two local charities. Students brought in their unwanted clothes and household items and swapped them for another item and donated a small amount for charity often in exchange for a home made cake!
Refugee Week Event
As part of Refugee Week, a national event to raise awareness about refugees and asylum seekers we put on an event at UWE. We showed a series of films about the life of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK as well as spreading the word about events, campaigns and volunteering to get involved in all over Bristol.
Paint an Elephant
This project attracted a lot of attention outside Red Bar when passing students got involved painting a life sized baby elephant! Painting proved therepeutic for students who wanted a break from revision! The model was donated to us by the charity Caudwell Children. (Registered Charity Number: 1079770)
